Symptoms of Retinal Detachment
Retinal detachment often occurs without any underlying cause. However it can be attributed to eye #trauma or a disease like #diabetes. When retinal detachment occurs, there would be a tear or hole in the retina into which eye fluids leak. This causes the separation of the transparent tissues of the retina from other tissues.
Other symptoms
include:
Floaters &
Flashing Lights

Floaters (In Eyes)
Floaters are very tiny black spots/lines or other shapes that drift across your field of vision. They are nothing but particles floating in the eyeball’s fluid. Floaters are not curable, but rarely indicate a serious problem if they have developed gradually and haven’t changed much over time. If you experience “flashes”-visual sensations of quick bursts or streaks of light-call your doctor right away, as these could signal a detached retina.

Causes
of Retinal Detachments
An injury to the eye or face can cause a
detached retina.
On rare occasions, a detached retina may
occur after LASIK surgery in highly near-sighted people.
#Treatment
for Detached Retina
Surgery is generally required to repair a
detached retina. This procedure is usually carried out by a retinal specialist
— and who has undergone advanced training in the medical and surgical treatment
of retinal disorders.
Surgical procedures used to treat a retinal
detachment include:
-
Scleral buckling surgery
-
Vitrectomy
-
Pneumatic retinopexy
After
Surgery
Do expect some amount of discomfort after
surgery for a detached retina. Your ophthalmologist will surely prescribe any
necessary medications for you and advise you when to resume normal activity.
You will need to wear an eye patch for a short time. Also, if a gas bubble was
placed in the eye, your ophthalmologist may recommend that you keep your head
in special positions for a time. During this time, say no to air travel,
Scuba diving. A change in glasses is also on the cards after the retina has
been reattached.
Famous People Who Suffered
Detached Retinas
One of the most famous people in modern
history to have developed detached retinas was a noted journalist, a publisher
and politician Joseph Pulitzer. Both his eyes had become blind when he was in
his 40s, however he was still able to run his newspaper empire regardless.
